This week on the Cyclist Magazine Podcast, James and Will are joined by Nico Roche. Nico was a pro rider from 2004 to 2021 and is a two-time Vuelta a España stage winner.

His long and successful career saw him have spells at Sky, AG2R and SaxoBank, among others. The Vuelta was Nico’s favourite race – he thrived in the heat – so we kick off by asking what makes that race so special, and does it get the respect it deserves?

Today, Nico is a top cycling pundit and gravel racer, so the conversation really gets around the houses in expert fashion, from his assessment of Tadej Pogačar to team dynamics to the evolution of training. Then things get personal, as Nico discusses what it was like being a young pro with Stephen Roche as your father.

We thoroughly enjoyed this one; Nico was a wonderful guy to talk to and very generous with his time, so thanks Nico! And to you, dear listener, we hope you enjoy as much as we did.

Interview begins at 6min 52sec.

James Spender

James Spender is Cyclist magazine's deputy editor, which is odd given he barely knows what a verb is, let alone how to conjugate one. But he does really, really love bikes, particularly taking them apart and putting them back together again and wondering whether that leftover piece is really that important.  The riding and tinkering with bicycles started aged 5 when he took the stabilisers off his little red Raleigh, and over the years James has gone from racing mountain bikes at the Mountain of Hell and Mega Avalanche to riding gran fondos and sportives over much more civilised terrain. James is also one half of the Cyclist Magazine Podcast, and if he had to pick a guest to go for a drink with, he'd take Greg LeMond. Or Jens Voigt. Or Phil Liggett. Hang on... that's a harder choice than it sounds. Instagram: @james_spender Height: 179cm Weight: 79kg Saddle height: 76cm
