This week on the Cyclist Magazine Podcast, James and Will are joined by ex-pro turned DS, Chris Lawless. At just 28 years old, Chris is the youngest directeur sportif in pro-cycling, but he’s got a whole lot of experience.

Cutting his teeth at Team Wiggins and JLT Condor, Chris went on to ride for Team Sky/Ineos, during which time he won the Tour de Yorkshire. As a no-nonsense rider with a stoic mentality, a move into team management naturally followed post-retirement, with Chris taking up a DS position at British Pro-Conti team, Saint Piran.

In this episode, Chris tells us about the highs and lows of his career on the road, the role of mental toughness and race craft, the problems in the British racing scene and how to nurture Saint Piran young talent to prepare it for the big time.

Interview begins at 12:50.

The weird and wonderful places to have hosted a Grand Tour stage

James Spender

James Spender is Cyclist magazine's deputy editor, which is odd given he barely knows what a verb is, let alone how to conjugate one. But he does really, really love bikes, particularly taking them apart and putting them back together again and wondering whether that leftover piece is really that important.  The riding and tinkering with bicycles started aged 5 when he took the stabilisers off his little red Raleigh, and over the years James has gone from racing mountain bikes at the Mountain of Hell and Mega Avalanche to riding gran fondos and sportives over much more civilised terrain. James is also one half of the Cyclist Magazine Podcast, and if he had to pick a guest to go for a drink with, he'd take Greg LeMond. Or Jens Voigt. Or Phil Liggett. Hang on... that's a harder choice than it sounds. Instagram: @james_spender Height: 179cm Weight: 79kg Saddle height: 76cm
